FLOOD CAUSE CONCERN IN MAIDUGURI, AS NECSOB CONDUCTS ASSESSMENT
By Aliyu Mohammed, Maiduguri
The Network of Civil Society Organizations in Borno State (NECSOB) has conducted a walk-through assessment of flood-affected communities in the Maiduguri metropolis (MMC and Jere). The assessment visits were facilitated by community-based organizations, including the Gamboru Youth Development Association (GYDA), Mashamari Development Association, and Bulabulin Development Association.
During these visits, NECSOB interacted with various community stakeholders. The situation in the visited areas was deeply concerning, with many people displaced from their homes and in urgent need of immediate assistance. Of particular concern is that the majority of the affected individuals are women and children, who are often the most vulnerable during humanitarian crises.
During the assessment, NECSOB also met with the NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) Northeast Coordinator and their team at the flood-affected Gamboru Moromoro market, as well as the SEMA (State Emergency Management Agency) team. Additionally, NECSOB met the state’s flood mitigation team behind the BOSAMA (Borno State Agricultural Development Programme) office, where they were reinforcing an earthen embankment along the river bank to prevent further flooding. NECSOB also met with the Borno state Great Green Wall Agency’s Director general during the visits.
The assessment revealed a pressing need for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Maiduguri. NECSOB calls on relevant authorities and stakeholders to provide urgent assistance to the affected communities.
