Anti-Corruption Day: No room for corruption in Kano – Gov. Yusuf warns

By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has retorted that his administration in the state led by NNPP will not heed any form of corruption by unscrupulous elements who are bent to scuttle his regime.

Tabling the feat achieved in fighting against corruption, the governor said the major accomplice factors that plunged public servants into a horrific situation in the past was the desire of some rotten public officeholders of the previous administration who “pocket” public funds –  averring that all the traumas have now been history in the present NNPP-led regime.

The governor was represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who made the known at the occasion organized by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission to commemorate 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day as set aside by the United Nations with the theme: “Uniting the World Against Corruption.”

A baffling the governor described as “terrible” was how the public workers and pensioners in the state had no guarantee of their salaries amount as the previous government officials were obligated to cut the pennies every month for a frivolous reason just to enrich themselves instead of passing it to them.

He said: ”Since the inception of our administration every public worker is receiving his wage without hitches. In line with this, we presented N6b and commenced settling the first batch of outstanding pensions from 2016 to this outgoing year 2023. And the second phase of the program will begin soon Insha Allah.

“Our administration was also resolved to secure foreign scholarships to 10100 indigenous of Kano to go abroad to further their studies,” he said.

According to the governor, it’s part of his agenda as pledged during the campaign which also includes in their blueprint to run a transparent and accountable leadership with zero tolerance for the state to prosper as the most populous state in Nigeria and the centre of commerce for the entire region.

He disclosed that since he assumed office he prioritized the implementation of Kano Anti-Corruption Strategies –a document mapping the modules for fighting corruption in the state as well as creating an anti-corruption and transparency unit in all the state MDs jointly supervised by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission and the office of head of the civil service.

Besides the active involvement of all the relevant key actors in the fight, the governor said, he was fully swung into action by recovering public assets illegally diverted for personal benefits.

He cited an example with the Asiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital that allegedly previously sold by the immediate past administration, and said the hospital is now recovered and fully renovated, rebuilt and resumed full operation.

The governor reiterated that his administration determined to germinate a mean of blocking linkages of public resources which have now been transmitted into meaningful achievements which we are witnessing today.

“This can be seen through the general renovation of the emergency unit of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and the provision of adequate equipment for ensuring better service delivery,” he added.
