CISLAC Trains stakeholders on information disclosure in defense and security in Adamawa

Lack of prudent budgetary expenditures and impact flow of information have been identified as critical challenges bedeviling the security services in the country.
Stakeholders including personnel of the Nigeria police force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,NSCDC, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency,NDLEA, Civil society organizations, politicians, Journalists and Traditional leaders made the observation at a one workshop in Yola, Adamawa state capital Wednesday.
Delivering his welcome address, Auwal Musa Ibrahim Rafsanjani, Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) said that the training was aimed at equipping the participants on the need to removing encumbrances blocking or delaying flow of information in Defense and security.
Represented by Abubakar Jimoh, Rafsanjani explained that training became imperative with the way to improving external oversight and information disclosure in defense and security, focusing on public procurement, finance and personal management.
Rafsanjani added that the program was organized by CISLAC in partnership with Transparency International Defense and security funded by Ministry of foreign affairs of the Netherlands urging attendees to ensure implement the agreed resolutions for the overall interest of the country.
In his presentation titled “Understanding the role external oversight in defense and security sector in Nigeria”. Professor Jude Momodu of the Centre for Security Studies at Modibbo Adama University Yola stressed the importance of reducing unnecessary secrecy in the information disclosure which will address corrupt tendencies in government circles.
Momodu enjoined participants to ensure applying the take aways in their various departments practically so as to kick start the change mantra for the betterment of our societies as a whole.
Other observations raised militating the information disclosure were lack of capacity and technical competence by some oversight bodies as it relates to oversight of the security sector as well as secret nature of the security sector which are viewed as major obstacles to effective oversight of security sector.
The participants and the Organisers of the training unanimously acknowledged the urgent need to encourage patriotism among Nigerians and a change of attitude or attitudinal change in our undertakings so as to revive our system for peace and security development.
