Gov. Babagana Zulum has urged university authorities to address the mismatch between their graduates and the labour market and urged the universities to engage their students and lecturers into community service and enterprenership development.
Governor Zulum also pledged to construct a student hostels and professorial bungalow flats to some serving and retiring Professor of university of Maiduguri..
Zulum who made the disclosure on Saturday during a public lecture organized in honour of the outgoing Vice Chancellor of University of Maiduguri, Professor Aliyu Shugaba as part of his send off ceremony held at Muhammadu Idimi International Conference Hall..
The governor also directed the varsity authority to nominate three to four personalities within the university community to liaise with the state government with a view to establish business outfit that improve the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) of the university.
He said ” I know funding is not enough for the universities, so we have to look inward, I want you to choose a team of 3 or 4 personalities to liase with the Borno state government to establish a business that will generate IGR for the university . we have faculties of Agriculture and vetinery medicine that handle animal fattening, diary production and poultry fattening that attract more money to the university”.
Zulum commended the leadership style of the outgoing VC and level of infrastructural and academic projects, programmes , facilities, equipments , machines, and amenities among others executed, provided, installed, established and introduced despite the notable challenges and threats the institution was confronted with without closure and interruption to academic activities including IPSS, ASUU and NASU issues..
Zulum said despite the challenges and constraints the Vice Chancellor was facing in managing the affairs of the institution, his tenure has the best management of the university, infrastructural development, academic progress, and leadership, particularly, the solar energy power supply of 12 and 20 KVA which have reached advanced stage of completion alongside some projects.
Earlier in his presentation, the Guest Lecturer in a public lecture titled,” Leadership challenges in Nigerian Universities”, dwelt on brief history of Nigerian universities both public and private and growth, capacity, lack of adequate and quality infrastructures, study or academic , research and entrepreneurship among others.
He said universities in Nigeria are under funded that their overhead cost can hardly pay electricity bills talkless of catering for laboratory equipment, health and water facilities, as well as other basic needs of the university..
Prof. Jibrin Dahiru Aminu who is the former Vice chancellor of the uiniversity also on dwelled on university management, students and staff welfare and unionism , socio economic activities within the university community, quality .assurance of academic studies, training and research of lecturers and other staff of the universities.
The former VC further identified lack of creativity and innovations and introduction or involvement of community services in the curriculum of the students to expose students graduates to participating in various community helps and services as well as lack of establishing cordial human relations between the unions and their leaders in campuses and monitoring of conduct, attitude And behavior of staff and students applying negotiations and dialogues method.
Prof. Amin urged students and people to use social.media properly and carefully and desist from writing rubbish or hatred speeches and needed to be controlled and managed by regulatory bodies to checkmate excess in the utilization of the new technology tools and devices .
Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Bulama Mali.Gubio prayed for peace, unity and stability of the university while calling on the staff and lecturers of the varsity to continue to be good parents and guardians of the students .
The outgoing Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Aliyu Shugaba in his vote of thanks appreciated all for their support, contributions , prayers, wishes and encouragement while thanking the management staff and students of the institution for their support and cooperation.
