Nasarawa Assembly passes into second reading bill on Free Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls.
As Lawmakers, Women Affairs Commissioner, former SSG, others hail Hon. Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim for sponsoring the bill.
Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has passed into second reading A Bill for a Law to Provide for Free Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in Nasarawa State Public Schools by Nasarawa State Government and Other Related Matters Therewith.
Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House announced the passage of the bill into second reading during the House proceedings today in Lafia.
The Speaker appreciated Hon. Hajarat Danyaro for sponsoring the bill, adding that it would go a long way in improving the hygienic condition of girls in schools and enhance their general health being.
” I will commit this bill to the House Committee on Health, Education and Women Affairs with the exception of the Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs.
“The committees should work on the bill and submit its report on the 6th of August, 2024,” he said.
Earlier , Hon Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs and member representing Nasarawa Central constituency while presenting the substance of the bill, said that the bill if passed would prevent the girls against cervical cancer.
“As this bill if passed will also improve the hygienic condition of our female students in secondary schools,” she said.
The lawmaker further said the bill if sees the light of the day would help girls on the issue of blockage of their wombs.
In their contributions, Hon Larry Ven-Bawa, Hon Daniel Ogazi, Hon Mohammed Omadefu, Hon Yusuf Chunbaya, Rt. Hon Muhammad Oyanki among others all supported the bill to scale second reading.
They said that the bill if passed would improve the quality of learning among girls in schools
They also said that the bill if passed would reduce stigmatization when girls are in menstrual period among other outstanding benefits drivable from the bill.
On their parts, Hon Aisha Rufai Ibrahim, Commissioner of Women Affairs and Hon Zainab Ahmed, the former SSG of the State who led other women to witnessed the day sitting and show solidarity for the bill commended Hon. Hajarat for sponsoring the bill.
They spoke extensively on the benefits of the bill describing it as timely while the Women Affairs commissioner assured of the state government commitment to provide sanitary pads to the female students.
