FG plans to enrol 11,000 Almajiris in FCT schools by September – Minister
By Aisha Musa
Over 11,000 out-of-school children in the Federal Capital Territory will be enrolled in schools by September 2024, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, said on Tuesday.
Recall that the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education in partnership with Commissioners of Education of some northern states, had earlier pledged to visit the six area councils in the nation’s capital, to identify and enroll not less than 10,000 out-of-school children before September.
Speaking in Abuja while taking a tour of the FCT Smart School in Karshi alongside the Minister of State for Education, Tanko Sununu, Mamman reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling the out-of-school children menace.
“Over 11,000 Almajiris were identified by the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education in the Federal Capital Territory alone, and they will be enrolled in different schools across the country by September,” he said.
The minister also stressed the plan by the government to establish one smart school in each state of the federation, saying currently, there are 26 of them while construction work on the remaining ones is ongoing.
“This is part of the legacy this government is delivering to Nigerians, which is to make provision for a digitalised school system for pupils to be trained in the use of technology right from kindergarten to basic and junior secondary school,” he said.
According to him, the teachers of the schools will not only be involved in the delivery of lessons but the development of what the kids would be taught.
