Nigerian Red Cross, IFRC donates N100,000, relief materials to Maiduguri flood victims

The Nigerian Society of Red Cross (NRC), with the support from the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) has assisted 1,850 victims of the September, 10/2024 Maiduguri flood that claimed many lives and property worth billions of Naira destroyed with N100,000 cash and relief materials.

Speaking at the flagging off the distribution of the relief materials and the cash at the NEMA central store, Maiduguri on Friday, the Assistant coordinator disaster response of the Red cross and Incidence Manager of the program, Dauda Mohammed said ” we are here to support those affected by the recent flood in Borno”

Mr Mohammad said ” Today we are targeting 1,850 person’s affected by the flood. We are supporting them with N100,000 cash, a blanket, mat, mosquito nets, kitchen utensils, sanitary items buckets and tent martials. This just the first phase”.

“As you are all aware there was a sudden flooding as a result of the of spellage of the Alau Dam which affected 80 percent of Maiduguri and its environs. Part of the support of the Red Cross is to support government to bring succour to the people”, Mohammad said.

He said ” the number one criteria use is for the beneficiary to be in Borno, in a local and area affected by the flood as well as the flood has affected your house.. we choose the most vulnerable person’s such as pregnant women, lactating mothers and elderly people, orphans and children of the people with disability and of course the poorest of the poor.”

Also the Chairman of the Borno chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross (NRC), Alhaji Bulama Mali Gubio said the items is just part of their windows might to support victims of Maiduguri flood.

Represented by the Special Adviser, NRC, Alhaji Abba But said “we are giving them mats, blankets, buckets, solar lamps, sanitary pads, kitchen utensils, and other materials just to support them as we cannot replace what they lost 100 percent it is only God can replace them”.

He said ” for today, we are targeting about 2,000 victims of the Maiduguri flood, and we are going to expand the beneficiaries under the next phase”

A beneficiary, Madu Kolo said ” we thank both International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC), Nigerian Red Cross (NRCS) International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), and the entire Red Cross society for the support, we really appreciate, May God reward them abandantly “.

Another Fatima Bukar while thanking the Red Cross community for the gesture, said “we lost everything to the flood but we thank God we are still alive. We want to use this opportunity to thank Red Cross society”.
