In the wake of the last week devastating fires in Damaturu and Gashua Markets, His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni has shown immediate concern and support for the affected communities. After conducting an on-ground assessment and offering his condolences, the Governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to take stock of the losses.
It was reported that an approximately over 500 million Naira was lost across the two locations, with many families left in distress. As a first line of response, Governor Buni donated 20 million Naira to the victims in Damaturu. In addition, he ordered SEMA to deliver 400 bags of rice (200 bags to each location) to assist families in need, recognizing the plight of small-holder shop owners who depend on daily sales to feed their families.
Movement of commodities (Cash and Kind) has already commenced to ensure full fulfilment of His Excellency’s directives.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, while announcing the response, assured that the food baskets will be distributed concurrently at 2 PM tomorrow (Friday) to aid in the swift recovery of affected families. The Executive Secretary also activated a comprehensive sensitization campaign across markets and hamlets during the Harmattan season, to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks and ensure safety for all.
Governor Buni’s quick response underscores his commitment to the welfare of the people of Yobe State. The collective efforts of the government and communities aim to ensure recovery and resilience for the victims of these devastating fires.
