Subsidy Removal: NLC Begins Two-day Warning Strike
By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman
As efforts by the FG to meet NLC officials proved abortive in constraining them from going to a two-day warning strike over fuel subsidy removal, the union embarked on the strike.
Daily Hint gathered that only the leadership of the Trade Union Congress, led by its President, Festus Osifo, showed up for the meeting scheduled for 3:00pm but started at exactly 5:30 pm.
A communique jointly signed by its national President Joe Ajaero and Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, said it decided to embark on a two-day warning strike following what was described as the failure of the Tinubu-led Federal Government to dialogue and engage stakeholders within the organised Labour on efforts to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.
NLC had on Friday declared that workers across the country should embark on a two-day warning strike from Tuesday, September 5, over the current hardship being experienced by Nigerians nationwide.
Earlier the TUC President, Lalong pleaded with the organised labour to give the federal government two weeks to respond to the workers’ demands.
He added that: “Both sides agreed to use the next two weeks to work out acceptable measures to cushion the effect of the government’s recent economic policies.
“On the issue of palliatives we are already discussing with Mr. President and we are going to carry over from here. We now need a period of about two weeks so that we can address those issues and bring them back again for further discussion
