Adamawa: GPF urges Gov.Fintiri to save Jackson from the hangman’s noose
From Umar Dankano, Yola.
A Sociocultural indigenous ethnic nationalities organization under the aegis ‘Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF) has cried out to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to grant the convicted Sunday Jackson clemency over the death sentence hanging on his head for murder offence.
Recall that Jackson as a farmer in his village had an fatal encounter with a herdman who took his livestock on his farm to feed on the crops which turned into a physical combat resulted to the death of the herdman due knife injuries he sustained on his body.
Jackson was arrested by the police and arraigned before a lower court where it was ruled that he die by handing which the case continued up to supreme court where the lower ‘s court judgement of culpable homicide punishable with death sentence was slammed on him again.
Leader of the group, Engineer Markus Gunduri at a press conference in Yola Tuesday said that the primary objective of the plea was to ensure justice and peace stressing that their business is not to review the judgements by courts but rather to enjoy the widow provided for by the 1999 Constitution which gives the Chief executive of a state the power to exercise his prerogative of mercy to pardon or grant respite on court’s case.
“The center point of our press briefing today is the conviction and capital sentence imposed on Mr Sunday Jackson by the Nigerian Courts following a fatal altercation between him and a nomadic herdsman which led to the demise of the latter.
“The herdsman man had attacked Mr Jackson with a knife following which he wrested the weapon from him and in self defense, inflicted injuries on the herdsman which turned out to be fatal.
“Our business here is not to review the Judgments of the Court which have been delivered. That is not our brief. We are here because the people of Nigeria in the Constitution they crafted for themselves as the ground norm of all relationships and operations among them within the State.
“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) designed within its corpus a provision under Section 212 to give the Chief Executive of a State the power to exercise his prerogative of mercy to pardon, grant respite to, or remit in whole or part any sentence imposed by the Courts.
“It is pursuant to this provision that we are calling upon Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to grant a pardon to Mr Sunday Jackson and save him from the sentence of death by hanging.
“We therefore call upon his Excellency Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to let Sunday Jackson breathe fresh air and live. We in GPF join the whole world to ask you to grant a state pardon to Sunday Jackson”. Gunduri appealed.
