Media’s Role in Amplifying Resilience Amid Boko Haram Resurgence

By Yusuf Ali

In recent months, the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in some communities has reignited fears of insecurity. For many, these attacks are a painful reminder of darker times when communities were forced to flee en masse, leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.

However, amidst this unsettling reality, a heartening narrative is emerging—one of resilience, unity, and courage.

Unlike the past, where the terror of insurgents crippled communities, citizens today are standing firm, refusing to succumb to fear. This resilience is a testament to years of effort by the Nigerian Armed Forces, whose sacrifices have significantly weakened Boko Haram’s operational capacity and restored peace to many areas. The gallant soldiers have written a story of hope, turning what seemed like insurmountable odds into remarkable victories.

Yet, there is a growing call for the media to play its part in shaping the narrative. Rather than focusing solely on the recent attacks, media platforms have a duty to celebrate the successes of the Nigerian Army. By highlighting the progress made, the media can inspire confidence in the military’s ability to defeat the insurgents completely.

As media practitioners we must tell the full story. Our soldiers have fought hard to reclaim our communities and restored peace in many hitherto occupied territories. Amplifying only the attacks without recognizing these successes undermines their sacrifices and efforts.

Moreover, the media holds the power to amplify the resilience of the people. By showcasing stories of individuals and communities who refuse to bow to fear, the media can inspire others to stand firm. This is crucial in combating the psychological warfare waged by insurgents, who rely heavily on instilling fear to achieve their goals.

As the nation grapples with this renewed threat, it is clear that defeating insurgency requires more than military might. It requires a united front—of soldiers, citizens, and storytellers—working together to preserve peace and protect the progress already made.

With the resilience of the people and the dedication of the armed forces, the narrative of hope and victory must remain at the forefront. The media has a duty to ensure that this story is heard, loud and clear.
