EFCC to Yahaya Bello: “Use the Kogi World-Class Hospital You Built!”
By Romanus Aberdeen
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly opposed a fresh application by embattled former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, seeking to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Bello, currently standing trial over an alleged ₦80.2 billion money laundering scandal, asked the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, to allow him travel overseas for urgent medical attention. His lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), argued that the former governor hadn’t left Nigeria in over eight years and needed treatment not available locally.
“This is just about releasing his passport,” Daudu said, noting that Yahaya Bello has no history of running from the law and would return before the end of August. He even suggested the court fix a specific return date.
But EFCC’s lead prosecutor, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), wasn’t having it.
“What are we talking about here? Low potassium? Mild hypertension? Those can be treated here. If he needs potassium, let him eat banana and pawpaw,” Pinheiro fired back.
She added, “From Abuja to Lokoja is just two hours. Didn’t he build a world-class hospital in Kogi? Let him go and use it, instead of flying six hours to the UK!”
