By Yusuf Ali
The Governor of Yobe State, Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni, CON, has approved automatic employment for 416 graduating students of the Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences, Damaturu, in a decisive move to strengthen healthcare service delivery across the state.
The beneficiaries comprise 158 Community Nurses, 196 Basic Nurses and Midwives, and 62 Higher National Diploma (HND) Nursing graduates trained by the institution.
Governor Buni announced the approval during the official graduation ceremony of the students held on Tuesday in Damaturu. He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana.
The Governor said the gesture aligns with his administration’s sustained investment in the health sector, aimed at addressing manpower gaps and improving access to quality healthcare services for the people of Yobe State.
He noted that the consistent support to the college over the past seven years has yielded significant results, particularly in producing qualified health professionals to serve in various facilities across the state.
According to him, the government has in recent years recruited over 3,500 healthcare workers, many of whom are graduates of the college, as part of efforts to ensure adequate staffing and professionalism in the sector.
Governor Buni reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a functional, efficient, and people-oriented healthcare system, adding that strategic investments would continue to receive priority attention.
He also highlighted the establishment of a world-class Biomedical Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) at the state university, recently commissioned to enhance research capacity and train young scientists in Yobe State.
The Governor assured the management of the college of continued government support, pledging to address their requests and further reposition the institution as a leading centre for health training in Nigeria.
He commended the outgoing Provost, Hadiza Sabo, for her leadership and contributions to maintaining high academic standards in the institution.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Mohammed Lawan Gana, disclosed that Yobe State recently emerged as the best-performing state in primary healthcare delivery in Nigeria, following an independent assessment by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum under the Federal Government’s National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. The recognition earned the state a $1.2 million prize.
Earlier, the Provost revealed that between 2019 and 2026, the college has graduated 1,485 students, all of whom were granted automatic employment—an initiative that has significantly enhanced the recruitment, deployment, and retention of healthcare personnel in the state.
The ceremony featured the commissioning of projects, the launch of a compendium magazine highlighting the administration’s achievements, and the graduation of students, including the pioneer set of HND nurses.
In a show of support, the state government purchased 10 copies of the magazine at a cost of ₦10 million, while the Chief Launcher, Liman Machina Dabuwa of Damuli Investment Company, purchased five copies at ₦1 million, among other contributions.
