How Amb. Halima Zakari Is Reshaping Jigawa Central and Beyond
By Abba Dukawa
In Nigeria’s evolving political story, Amb. Dr. Halima Suleiman Zakari stands out as a figure whose journey is both inspiring and impactful. Across Jigawa State and beyond, her name has become synonymous with compassion, service, and quiet, determined ambition. What defines her is not just her growing national profile, but her deep connection to people and purpose.
At the heart of her aspirations is a clear goal: to represent Jigawa Central Senatorial District in the Senate in 2027. Though widely seen as a potential contender, her consistent groundwork already points to a vision in motion.
What sets Dr. Zakari apart is her grassroots approach. She isn’t distant from the people she hopes to serve. She is embedded in their daily realities. For her, leadership begins with listening, understanding, and showing up.
That belief drives the Nana Halima Empowerment Initiative. Recently, the initiative trained 150 beneficiaries in Jigawa State through a five-day intensive makeup program. Participants learned modern techniques, client management, and industry best practices. But the program went beyond skills. It built confidence, encouraged self-reliance, and nurtured the entrepreneurial mindset needed in today’s market. It reflects her commitment to sustainable, grassroots economic development.
She also donated seven vehicles to APC chairmen across Jigawa Central’s seven local government areas: Birnin Kudu, Buji, Dutse, Gwaram, Jahun, Kiyawa, and Miga. In the same effort, she provided 76 motorcycles to ward chairmen. The move underscores her support for party welfare and grassroots mobilization.
Over the years, she has earned community trust not through promises, but through consistent presence and action.
Humanitarian work is the heartbeat of her public life. With a focus on women and youth empowerment, she champions girls’ education, economic opportunities for women, and pathways for youth development. These are not abstract ideals. They are lived commitments, visible in tangible programs and life-changing interventions. That includes giving back to her alma mater, Federal Government College Kiyawa, with a ₦30 million donation to renovate girls’ and boys’ dormitories, improving both learning conditions and student welfare.
Dr. Zakari’s development model is practical. She moves beyond advocacy to implementation: distributing startup kits to aspiring entrepreneurs, organizing vocational training, and creating opportunities for those often left behind. Her work tackles unemployment and poverty by offering not just relief, but dignity and opportunity.
Her contributions to education are substantial. By sponsoring the renovation and construction of school facilities worth over ₦100 million, she has helped create safer, more conducive learning environments. It’s an investment in infrastructure and in the future.
In healthcare, her compassion is equally clear. She has supported hospitals and vulnerable patients, including women suffering from Vesicovaginal Fistula, a condition that brings both physical and social hardship. Through her interventions, she expands access to care and restores hope and dignity.
Beyond structured initiatives, Dr. Zakari responds in critical moments. During festive seasons and times of crisis, she reaches out to widows, orphans, and struggling families. It quietly reinforces her role as a pillar of support in her community.
A multidisciplinary executive with broad experience, she has spent her career helping organizations and communities reach their full potential. Her expertise spans management in both private and public sectors, with a proven record in strategic decision-making and collaborative leadership.
Having led major financial and development institutions, she brings international experience and diplomatic insight to public service. As a Special Non-Career Ambassador, she helped build diplomatic relations, lead negotiations, and foster bilateral cooperation. She established strong communication channels and lasting relationships with government officials and key stakeholders.
As Chairperson of African Modular Refineries Ltd., she led partnerships with international investors and secured a $10 million USTDA grant for a 20,000-barrel-per-day modular refinery. The project advances Nigeria’s push for energy independence.
Politically, she represents a refreshing blend of empathy and ambition. She is part of a new generation of Northern Nigerian leaders bridging service and governance. In a region where female political participation has been limited, her rise signals possibility, progress, and expanding space for women’s voices.
She remains in a preparatory phase, building influence through advocacy, public engagement, and strategic connections. Her path is deliberate and grounded. Jigawa State APC leadership has commended her support for party structures across Jigawa Central. That recognition reflects a broader point: effective leadership strengthens grassroots institutions and delivers support where it matters most.
Halima Zakari isn’t rushing the process. She is building it thoughtfully.
Her story is still unfolding, but its direction is clear. Anchored in service, empowerment, and community development, she is positioning herself as a candidate who understands the responsibilities of office, not just the ambition of seeking it.
As 2027 approaches, her challenge will be converting goodwill into widespread political support. For now, she is a reminder that leadership, at its best, begins with humanity and grows through action. Through strategic investments in education, infrastructure, and party welfare, Amb. Halima Zakari is delivering lasting change across Jigawa Central.
