DAMATURU, Yobe State, Nigeria — Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved the construction of four additional modern markets across the state, bringing the total number of modern and ultra-modern markets initiated by his administration to 14 since assuming office in 2019.

The approval was announced in a public advertisement issued by the Yobe State Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Solid Minerals and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Zanna Ibrahim Ali.

The new markets will be located in Bumsa in Gulani Local Government Area, Sabon Garin Nangere in Nangere Local Government Area, Girgir in Jakusko Local Government Area and Ngelzarma in Fune Local Government Area.

According to the ministry, the projects are part of the state government’s strategy to expand commercial infrastructure, stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities and improve access to modern trading facilities across Yobe State.

“The new markets are designed to serve as modern commercial hubs that will provide traders with improved facilities, encourage rural and urban trade, attract private investment and strengthen local value chains,” the statement said.

The ministry said the projects would improve the livelihoods of traders and business owners while supporting sustainable economic growth in the benefiting communities.

It noted that the Buni administration has completed the Damaturu, Potiskum, Nguru and Gashua ultra-modern markets, as well as the Ngalda and Yunusari modern markets. Supporting infrastructure has also been provided at the Potiskum, Ngalda and Yunusari markets to enhance commercial activities.

The statement added that the Geidam Ultra-Modern Market has reached over 90 per cent completion, while construction is ongoing at the modern markets in Machina, Buni Yadi and Yusufari.

“With the approval of these four additional projects, Governor Buni’s administration will have initiated the construction of 14 modern and ultra-modern markets across Yobe State in seven years, demonstrating an unprecedented commitment to commercial infrastructure development,” the ministry added.

The ministry expressed optimism that the expanding network of markets would strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises, improve agricultural and livestock value chains, increase internally generated revenue and create more employment opportunities across the state.
