Bauchi Gov. Bala Mohammed Swears in 12 New Perm Secs
By Mamuda Sani, Bauchi
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has inaugurated 12 permanent secretaries.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House banquet hall on Tuesday, the governor voiced concern over the lack of commitment by civil servants.
According to him, civil servants are only interested in what they will get from the service by whatever means other than in what they could do to move the service forward.
He said his administration has resolved to restore sanity to the civil service and get the state back on track, thereby putting an end to the “business as usual” syndrome.
He warned that his administration wouldn’t hesitate to invoke the wrath of the civil service rules on any public servant, including permanent secretaries, found wanting in the discharge of their duties
His words: “It is worrisome that the civil service of today leaves much to be desired. The service has lost the culture of commitment, dedication, selflessness and sacrifice.
“Civil servants are more interested in what they will get from the service by whatever means than in what they would do to move the service forward.”
There is therefore the need for a paradigm shift towards restoring the faded glory of the civil service. You should resist the temptation to misappropriate public funds or engage in activities culpable of bringing the government into disrepute.
“To this end, civil servants should be trained and retrained to have a knowledge-driven service and the civil servants should be acquainted with the norms and values of service so as to avoid trial and error in the discharge of their duties.”
Mohammed also charged the 12 permanent secretaries to steer clear of partisan politics.
He emphasised the importance of upholding the principles and integrity of the civil service.
