“Addressing the Economic Challenges of Rising Food Costs in the Lake Chad Region”

…..Recommendations on Coping Strategies and Government intervention Ahead of Ramadan Fasting 2024.

By Dr Grema Kyari

In today’s discussion on Radio Ndarason International in Maiduguri, Dr. Grema Kyari, Founder of Rider Option Standard Vision, and Dr. Jidda Ajayi from the University of Maiduguri highlighted the pressing issue of the rising cost of foodstuffs in the Lake Chad region, particularly in light of the upcoming Ramadan fasting period for 2024.

During the discussion, both experts emphasized the importance of implementing belt-tightening measures to navigate the current economic challenges caused by the increasing prices of essential food items. They stressed that individuals and households need to be proactive in managing their resources effectively to cope with the financial strain resulting from the escalating cost of food.

Furthermore, Dr. Kyari and Dr. Ajayi called on the government, businesses, and philanthropists to step up and provide additional support to the community, especially during the fasting period. They emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to alleviate the burden on both Muslim and non-Muslim communities facing economic hardships due to the surge in food prices.

In light of these insights, the discussion underscored the urgency of implementing practical coping mechanisms and advocating for increased government intervention to address the economic challenges posed by the rising cost of foodstuffs in the Lake Chad region ahead of Ramadan fasting in 2024

They both commended the recent foods distribution by Borno State Government and some members of National Assembly , where they urged the State Government to have Borno State Social Register ( BSSR ) to track effective allocation and distribution pattern of foods and cash transfer as the era of using manual pattern of distribution is gone and has no precision and coherence .
