Just in: Lead British International School Shutdown Over Bullying Of Student

By Aisha Musa

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has confirmed the shutdown of Lead British International School, in Gwarimpa, Abuja, following widespread outrage over viral videos showing students being bullied within the school premises.

Report earlier shows that a staff member of the school had announced the shutdown of the school for three days, after the Minister for Women Affairs, Uju Kenedy-Ohanenye, paid a visit to the school on Tuesday.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the FCT Education Secretariat, Kabiru Musa, confirmed that the school had been shut down by the Honorable Minister for Women Affairs for the stated period.

“Yes it was shut down by the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs for 3 days”, he responded via Whatsapp message.

As of the time of filing this report, however, we could not ascertain whether the FCTA would investigate other private schools in which alleged cases of bullying take place in the FCT.

While the head of the school, Ogunkambi Abraham, noted in a statement that the Management had commenced investigations into the case and had set up a committee to carry out a “thorough inquiry”, another representative told the Women’s Minister that the school was “hereby shut for three days”.

An X user, @moooyeeee, had on Monday night, posted two videos on the microblogging platform of a female student of the school being repeatedly slapped by other classmates while calling for justice for the victim.

The videos had drawn angry reactions from other users on the platform, some of whom shared other videos of students of the same school being bullied.
