ARSENAL READY TO ACTIVATE £48M RELEASE CLAUSE FOR WORLD-CLASS FORWARD BEFORE JANUARY TRANSFER DEADLINE
By Aremu Adebayo
Arsenal are reportedly prepared to activate the £48m release clause of Nico Williams to bring the Athletic Club winger to North London this month.
Williams, a long-term target for the Gunners, was on Arsenal’s radar following his stellar performances for Spain at Euro 2024, where he played a key role in their title-winning campaign. With manager Mikel Arteta keen to strengthen his attacking options, a January move appears increasingly likely.
The urgency to sign Williams has been heightened by the injury to star winger Bukayo Saka, who is expected to be sidelined until March after tearing his hamstring in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace in December. Conversations with Williams’ representatives will determine whether a mid-season transfer is feasible, but Arsenal are ready to meet the release clause to secure the deal.
Saka’s absence leaves Arsenal with Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri, and Raheem Sterling as their wide options. While Williams predominantly operates on the left flank, he could provide cover on the right during Saka’s recovery.
The 21-year-old winger has also been linked with Barcelona, but the Catalan giants are struggling financially and are focused on navigating La Liga’s stringent financial regulations, making a significant January signing unlikely. With Nico Williams release clause considered affordable for a player of his pedigree, Arsenal appear well-positioned to capitalise.
Williams rose to prominence during Euro 2024, where he delivered a standout performance in the final against England, scoring the opening goal and earning the Man of the Match award.
Despite his summer heroics, Williams has had a quieter domestic season, scoring just one league goal, one Europa League goal, and one in the Copa del Rey for Athletic Club. However, his immense potential and pedigree have made him a prime target for Europe’s elite clubs.
