Buhari: Gov. Buni’s Final Show of Loyalty
By Yusuf Ali
In the tradition of our ancestors—who understood loyalty is measured in deeds, not words—let me share the story of a man whose heart beat with devotion: Governor Mai Mala Buni CON, and his final journey with his beloved mentor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
When news reached Governor Buni that his political father was gravely ill in a London hospital, the Governor—a devoted Muslim—quietly organized prayers for the President’s recovery. This was no political performance, but the act of a loyal son praying for his mentor.
In Damaturu, Yobe State’s capital, even as he engaged in critical security matters with stakeholders, Governor Buni engaged Mallams to offer special prayers for Buhari’s healing.
Upon learning of the former President’s passing, Governor Buni was visibly distraught. As we, his aides, gathered to console him, anyone could see he had lost a gem. He adjourned the State Executive Council meeting, declared a public holiday, and ordered statewide prayers for the repose of his mentor’s soul.
Governor Buni flew to Abuja after ensuring Yobe would mourn appropriately. There, he joined colleagues and the bereaved family to oversee every detail of the burial preparations.
The defining moment of loyalty came as military pallbearers carried the casket with solemn precision. Governor Buni stood in the procession behind President Tinubu—but his heart bore a weight of personal grief that set him apart.
Recall their bond: In 2015, as APC National Secretary, Buni stood firm with Buhari against all temptations, ensuring the party’s victory and Buhari’s presidency. Theirs was a rhythm of mutual devotion—a son ensuring his father’s triumph.
In an age where loyalty is often measured by proximity to power, Governor Buni redefined it. True devotion reveals itself not in glory, but in grief. His silent prayers, Yobe’s collective supplications, and his unwavering presence at the burial rites wrote the final chapter of a leader who understood service as love.
As we honor former President Buhari, let us also remember Governor Buni—the political son who proved ancient virtues of loyalty and filial love still thrive. True greatness lies not in being served, but in serving others, even unto the grave.
This is how a son honors his father. This is how a leader serves his mentor. This is how loyalty wears the face of love.
May Allah grant our father, mentor, and leader Aljannatul Firdaus.
