Flooding: wash, nedc commence desilting of 1 million drainages in Northeast, drilling of Solar powered borehole in Northeast

In order to mitigates the effect of global warming and flooding, tackled water scarcity and improved security in the region, the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced the desilting and evacuation of 1 million meters of drainages, drilling and Installation of Solar powered boreholes and streetlights across the the region.

The initiative is inline with the sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as well as Federal and the state government Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme.

Speaking in an in ntervuew with Journalists shortly after the inspection of the desiltation, and evacuation as well streetlights and Solar powered boreholes across the Maiduguri metropolis on Tuesday, the Managing Director of the NEDC, Alhaji Goni Alkali said ” our idea is to do two things at the same time, You know the effect of global warming and it’s consequences, which one if it is flooding. To mitigate the effect of the flooding we are going to desilt one million meters of drainages in the 6 states of the Northeast . Here in Maiduguri, we are targeting about 300,000 meteres of drainages in this rainy season”.

The MD said to also improve sanitation and hygiene, the Commission is not only evacuating and desilting drainages but provide potable water, stressing that within the Maiduguri metropolis alone over 50 Solar powered boreholes were provided, in addition to the ones in the local government areas.

According to him, this Solar powered boreholes will help address the problem of water shortage across the metropolis, whenever there no electricity.

“The desilting and evacuation of the drainages is also providing jobs to the teeming unemployed youths across the 6 states of the region”, the MD added.

On the issue of security, Alhaji Goni Alkali said we have also installed Solar powered streetlights across the region, some completed, ongoing, while will commence soon, this is to improve the security and safety of the people, So that people can move and do their business free in the night”.

The NEDC MD also explained plans are under way to see that the commission in collaboration with the Borno state government to provide a comprehensive solutions to the Bulunkutu drainage system, as very soon team of engineers will be deployed to the Ed site to asses the area.

As regard to the waste management, he sad “we are planniing to bring modern dump sites so that people would stop dumping waste in the drainages, as well as covert the waste into wealth and create jobs to youths through recycling plants.”

He explained that the whole idea was to improve sanitation, hygiene and the security of the people.
