Forensic Audit Urged for NNPCL: Dr. Gashinbaki Calls for Transparency, Accountability
By Tom Garba
Dr. I.B Gashinbaki, Pioneer President and Chairman Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria has advocated for a comprehensive forensic audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). This call to action was made during his appearance on the Money Line Show With Nancy on AIT Abuja on Friday, December 13, 2024.
Dr. Gashinbaki emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the management of the NNPCL, stressing that a thorough forensic audit would help identify areas of inefficiency and corruption. He noted that the usual traditional audit is insufficient, and instead, a forensic performance audit is necessary to examine the operations, quantum, and value of the NNPCL.
The NNPCL has faced criticism for its lack of transparency, particularly regarding the non-functioning refineries. Dr. Gashinbaki cited the example of the NNPCL, stating that Nigerians are tired of the issues surrounding the refineries. He advocated for a “surgical forensic performance audit” to thoroughly examine the NNPCL and eliminate inefficiencies.
Dr. Gashinbaki’s call for an audit comes at a time when the NNPCL is facing increased scrutiny over its financial management practices. As a renowned expert in forensic accounting and fraud investigation, Dr. Gashinbaki’s statement highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the organization’s operations.
The Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN), led by Dr. Gashinbaki, has been instrumental in promoting good governance and transparency in Nigeria. The organization has partnered with various government agencies and institutions to provide training and support in forensic accounting and fraud investigation.
