Gov. Buni Brings Power to Kanamma, Border Town With Niger

By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, is making history with a major electrification project aimed at bringing electricity to Kanamma, the headquarters of Yunusari Local Government Area, which has never had access to power supply.

Kanamma, located on Nigeria’s border with Niger, is the only local government headquarters among the 774 in the country that has never been connected to the national grid. However, Governor Buni’s administration has embarked on an ambitious plan to change that reality.

The project, which has already reached an advanced stage, is expected to provide much-needed electricity to the town, improving living standards and boosting economic activities.

The initiative is part of Buni’s broader effort to expand electricity supply to rural communities across Yobe State.

Speaking with Daily Hint correspondent, a government official described the project as a landmark achievement, expressing optimism that the electrification work would be successfully completed and hoping for its smooth execution.

Meanwhile, Daily Hint learnt that residents of Kanamma are overwhelmed with excitement as they anticipate the completion of the project. For them, the news is nothing short of a dream come true. Decades of living in total darkness, relying on generators and lanterns, are finally coming to an end.

“We have waited for this moment for so long. I was born and raised in Kanamma, and I have never seen electricity here,” said Mallam Sani Usman, a 60-year-old farmer. “This project will change our lives in ways we cannot even imagine. Our children will be able to study at night, businesses will thrive, and healthcare services will improve.”

Similarly, Amina Ibrahim, a shop owner in the town’s market, shared her excitement about the economic benefits the power supply would bring.

Speaking with Daily Hint, she said, “We run our businesses using expensive fuel-powered generators, and many times, we cannot afford to operate them for long. With electricity, we can preserve goods, use freezers, and expand our businesses. This is a blessing for us.”

For others, like Bashir Haruna, a local tailor, the impact of electricity goes beyond business.

He told Daily Hint that “for years, we have relied on manual sewing machines. Now, we can switch to electric ones, which will make our work faster and more efficient. This is more than just light; it is progress.”

As the project nears completion, residents remain hopeful that this development will open doors for more infrastructural advancements in Kanamma and beyond.

Governor Buni’s rural electrification drive aligns with his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth, particularly in underserved communities.

Residents of Kanamma and the entire Yunusari LGA eagerly await the final phase of the project, which will mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s electrification efforts.

For a town that has spent its entire existence in darkness, the arrival of electricity is not just an infrastructure upgrade—it is the dawn of a new era.
