Gov. Buni’s Commitment to Girl-Child Education

By Yusuf Ali

Not long ago, while driving to Kano at the outskirts of Potiskum, I witnessed a scene that left a lasting impression on me. A group of teenage girls were trekking long distances back home after school. Their determination was evident, but so was the burden of the journey they endured daily in pursuit of education.

I stopped, encouraged them with a token of support, and reminded them to remain steadfast in their studies. I told them that one day, they would be leaders of tomorrow. As they continued on their way, I couldn’t help but wish they had bicycles to ease their long and exhausting trek to and from school.

It was therefore not a coincidence—but rather a testament to visionary leadership—that His Excellency, Mai Mala Buni, a compassionate leader and firm believer in the power of education, took decisive action to support such young girls across the state.

In his continued commitment to promoting girl-child education, Governor Buni has distributed over four hundred bicycles to female students in different parts of Yobe State. This thoughtful intervention is more than just a donation; it is a strategic investment in access, retention, and academic excellence. By reducing the physical burden of long-distance trekking, these bicycles symbolize mobility, empowerment, and opportunity.

Just two weeks ago, the Governor further demonstrated his unwavering dedication by disbursing ₦1.2 billion to support 32,382 girls across the state under the AGILE Project. This landmark intervention is designed to strengthen girl-child education in Yobe State by addressing barriers to enrollment, retention, and completion.

These actions reflect a government that understands that educating the girl-child is not charity—it is nation-building.

H.E Governor Buni’s initiatives are restoring hope, strengthening families, and shaping a generation of confident, educated young women who will contribute meaningfully to society.
