Governor Buni: Strengthening Faith, Alleviating Hardship, and Uplifting Yobe State

By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman

In a demonstration of unwavering commitment to the spiritual, social, and economic well-being of Yobe State, His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, has once again set a remarkable example of leadership by prioritizing religious and humanitarian interventions during the sacred month of Ramadan.

Moreover, as part of his dedication to fostering moral values, unity, and peaceful coexistence, Governor Buni has approved the sum of ₦41 million to support Ramadan Tafsir across the state. This funding, released through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, ensures that respected Islamic scholars are adequately supported as they provide essential religious teachings, interpreting the Holy Qur’an and guiding the Muslim faithful toward spiritual growth.

Similarly, this initiative underscores Governor Buni’s recognition of the crucial role that religious leaders play in shaping an ethical and harmonious society. His continuous support for religious programs reflects his belief in the power of faith as a unifying force, fostering a sense of brotherhood among Yobe’s people. The Commissioner for Religious Affairs has assured that the funds will be disbursed transparently and effectively, ensuring that the Tafsir sessions are successful and impactful.

In addition to strengthening the religious foundation of Yobe State, Governor Buni has also taken decisive steps to ease the burden of vulnerable households during Ramadan by launching the “Ramadan Food Basket” initiative, aimed at 30,000 disadvantaged households across the state. Alongside this effort, the government is expending ₦297 million to operate 102 Ramadan feeding centers, an increase from the previous 85 centers, ensuring that more people—especially the less privileged—receive daily meals to sustain them during the fasting period.

Furthermore, this large-scale humanitarian effort extends beyond vulnerable families, reaching internally displaced persons (IDPs), teachers, junior staff of the Teaching Service Board, SUBEB, Science and Technical Education Board, resident doctors, flood victims, and farmers affected by poor harvests. Such an inclusive approach highlights the governor’s deep understanding of the diverse needs of his people and his dedication to ensuring that no one is left behind.

Beyond these immediate relief efforts, Governor Buni’s commitment to the people of Yobe is not limited to seasonal interventions. Under his leadership, the government has consistently remained responsive to the needs of its citizens in times of crisis and recovery. For instance, following the devastating 2024 floods, his administration—through strategic partnerships with the Federal Government and development organizations—swiftly provided emergency relief, including food and non-food items, to affected communities.

At the same time, in a bid to tackle the recurring issue of flooding while harnessing water for agricultural productivity, the government is implementing the Erosion, Flood, and Water Harvesting Project in Damaturu and Buni Yadi towns. This proactive initiative will not only mitigate environmental disasters but also provide sustainable irrigation solutions, reinforcing the state’s commitment to food security and climate resilience.

Equally important, the administration has made giant strides in economic empowerment. In November 2024, Governor Buni launched two groundbreaking initiatives aimed at restoring livelihoods and fostering economic growth:

₦1.4 billion support for 25,500 flood victims and vulnerable groups (₦50,000 per beneficiary)

₦1 billion empowerment scheme for 10,000 small business owners (₦100,000 per beneficiary)

Taken together, these interventions are clear testaments to Governor Buni’s proactive governance, people-centered policies, and unwavering commitment to improving lives.

While the government continues to play its role in supporting the most vulnerable, Governor Buni has called on citizens to embrace kindness, generosity, and solidarity during Ramadan and beyond. In his words:

“We all have a collective responsibility to complement the government’s efforts to see that our neighbors do not break their fast or go to bed on an empty stomach.”

Likewise, he also emphasized transparency and accountability in the distribution of food aid, urging those entrusted with the task to carry out their duties with the fear of Allah and ensure that all interventions reach their intended beneficiaries.

Ultimately, Governor Mai Mala Buni’s leadership continues to shine as a beacon of hope for the people of Yobe State. His dedication to faith-based initiatives, social welfare, economic empowerment, and disaster resilience exemplifies the true essence of responsive governance.

As the people of Yobe observe the Holy Month of Ramadan, they do so with the reassurance that they have a leader who listens, cares, and acts. May Allah (SWT) bless these initiatives, grant Yobe State continued peace and prosperity, and strengthen the unity among its people.

With Governor Buni at the helm, Yobe State is not just moving forward—it is thriving.
