Governor Mai Mala Buni: Powering Progress from the Grassroots
By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman
In the arid expanse of northeastern Nigeria, where development challenges are as vast as the terrain, Yobe State is scripting a different narrative—one of quiet but resolute transformation.
At the heart of this story is Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, whose inclusive leadership model is deepening democracy, empowering local governments, and driving real, measurable progress in the lives of everyday people.
From potable water projects in remote wards to swift emergency medical responses on dusty highways, Buni’s governance philosophy is simple: development must be felt at the grassroots.
Under Buni’s watch, the 17 local government areas in Yobe State have become true engines of change. A shining example is Tarmuwa LGA, where Hon. Mohammed Lamido Musa, the Executive Chairman, led the replacement of vital components at the Gijagiri solar-powered borehole in Mandada Ward.
The result? A long-dormant water source is flowing again, bringing clean, reliable water to residents who had endured years of hardship.
But this is not an isolated success. Across the state, LGA Chairmen are executing impactful projects in water supply, healthcare, education, and security—quiet revolutions that often go unnoticed. These projects are made possible by the enabling environment created by Governor Buni’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and decentralized governance.
His style is not just top-down leadership; it is governance that listens, empowers, and delivers.
Perhaps no program exemplifies Governor Buni’s vision better than the Yobe Emergency Medical Ambulance Services (YEMABUS). In a state where distance often determines survival, YEMABUS brings emergency medical care to the accident scene—timely, professional, and lifesaving.
In Damagum, when tragedy struck and lives were on the line, YEMABUS responded. Five severely injured victims were stabilized on-site and transported to the Yobe State Teaching Hospital for advanced care—all free of charge. This initiative reflects the governor’s resolve to make healthcare accessible, responsive, and equitable.
It’s no longer just about building hospitals—it’s about ensuring those hospitals can be reached in time.
Infrastructure, too, is being reimagined under Buni’s administration. The ongoing 4.2-kilometre Fadawa–Daya road project linking Nangere and Fika LGAs is more than just asphalt—it is a lifeline. With the laterite now fully laid, residents anticipate smoother transportation, increased economic activity, and enhanced access to essential services.
The road stands as a metaphor for the governor’s broader mission: to connect the disconnected, energize local economies, and usher in inclusive growth across every corner of Yobe.
Governor Buni’s development blueprint is not a promise—it is a practice. It is evident in every reconnected pipe, every life-saving ambulance, every kilometre of road, and every empowered local government.
At a time when many leaders centralize power and neglect the grassroots, Buni is charting a different course—one where governance is shared, progress is visible, and people matter.
Yobe is on a steady path of progress—one project, one community, one life at a time. And at the helm is a leader who understands that true democracy begins where the people are.
