By Aishatu Tijjani
In a groundbreaking move aligned with federal policy, the Yobe State Government has established the Ministry of Livestock Development to enhance the state’s agricultural sector.
Dr. Musa Abba Kollere, the pioneer Permanent Secretary of the ministry, disclosed this during a media briefing in Damaturu.
He praised Governor Mai Mala Buni for his visionary leadership in implementing the initiative, positioning Yobe as a leader in livestock development.
According to Dr. Kollere, Yobe State boasts over 160 indigenous veterinary doctors and the second-largest grazing reserve in sub-Saharan Africa, making it well-equipped to drive livestock productivity.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving the livestock value chain and ensuring sustainable development.
“The newly established ministry comprises specialized technical departments, including Veterinary Medical Services, Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, Animal Breeding Technology, Pasture and Range Management, Livestock and Fisheries Services.
“Additionally, the ministry oversees key agencies such as the Pilot Abattoir and L-PRES to complement its objectives.”
Dr. Kollere highlighted the state’s annual free vaccination program, aimed at preventing zoonotic diseases under the “One Health” initiative urging Yobe residents to embrace the new ministry’s innovative techniques to boost milk, meat, and leather production, further strengthening the state’s livestock sector.
