International women’s Day, NAOWA distributes food items to widows of fallen heroes

The Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association ( NAOWA), as part of activities to celebrate International Women’s Day, distributed food items to the widows of the fallen heroes
Speaking at the occasion to mark International Women’s Day at the NAOWA secretariat, Maimalari cantonment, Maiduguri on Saturday, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division, Major General Abubakar Haruna said the gesture which is part of activities line up for the International Women’s Day, was to show support and love to the widows of the fallen heroes, that the Nigerian Army is still with them.
“Every man is born of women and there is need for us to support them, they are our mothers, sisters, daughters and wives.. Today, we are here to celebrate our women who have excel in their field of endeavours”, the GOC said.
General Haruna assured that Nigerian Army will join hands with other stakeholders to promote gender equality and fight Gender Based violence and other crimes against women.
He said, the Nigerian Army under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Olafemi Oluyede is committed to ensuring women are safe to carry out their duties, stressing that women and children are most insurgency and other crisis..
“We hereby join hands with the rest of the world to celebrate our women to add our voices call for gender equality,GBV and crimes against women “, General Haruna added..
Earlier in her welcome address, the President 7 Division chapter of NAOWA, Mrs Aisha Haruna said, every 8th March was set up by the United Nations to celebrate and honor women and fight against GBV, rape, stereotypes and marginalization against women.
Represented by Mrs Caroline Yusuf Said “this years theme of International Women’s Day ” Accelerating action” is apt as it gives stakeholders the opportunity to put more efforts in fighting GBV and other violence against women”.
She called on the men to support their wives, sisters, mother’s and daughters to ensure gender equality and fight against GBV.
Also in her presentation, a resource person, Mrs Easther Jibrin said ” what we are asking as women is for the men to give us the opportunity. We are not fighting men or competing with men, you are our fathers, husbands and son. You should support”.
“We therefore, call on our men to support us to ensure gender equality and political participation”, she added.
Items distributed includes rices, noddles, cooking oil and other condiments.
