Kano Assembly Passes Censorship Board Amendment Bill, Grants Stricter Media Regulations
From Hussaini Ibrahim Kafi, Kano
The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the Kano State Censorship Board Amendment Bill 2025, granting the board expanded regulatory powers over entertainment and media content in the state.
The passage followed deliberations by the Committee of the Whole House and the third reading by the Clerk, Bashir Diso, during Monday’s plenary session, which was presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.
Addressing journalists after the session, Lawan Husseini, the lawmaker representing Dala Constituency, stated that the amendment strengthens the board’s oversight functions, including the registration of event centres and the enforcement of strict compliance with Islamic principles in entertainment-related activities.
Daily Hint Reporter further revealed that the board’s name had been officially modified from State Censorship Board to Kano State Censorship Board to clarify its jurisdictional authority.
“All films, series, and serials must now be censored and certified by the board before they can be aired,” he said, emphasizing the new measures to regulate media content. Additionally, the revised law prohibits the indiscriminate shooting of films in the state without prior approval from the board.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Water Users Association Bill 2025 has passed its second reading in the Assembly. The proposed legislation seeks to establish an association for irrigation farmers who depend on dams and canal water to boost agricultural productivity. It also aims to improve irrigation infrastructure and ensure the proper maintenance of dams across the state.
The Assembly is expected to further deliberate on the water users’ bill in subsequent sittings.
