KASU Suspends Strike After Government Intervention
By Hussaini Ibrahim kaffi
The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike, which began on February 18, following the intervention of the Kaduna State Government.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Dr. Peter Adamu, Chairman of ASUU, KASU chapter, who confirmed that the decision to suspend the industrial action was reached on Saturday.
According to Adamu, the government demonstrated goodwill in addressing the union’s grievances by promptly releasing funds to settle 60 percent of the withheld salaries for September 2017 and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five academic sessions.
He further stated that the government had agreed to a timeline for the payment of several outstanding entitlements, including the five months of withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), pension remittance from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and Group Life Assurance.
Additionally, Adamu noted that the government had shown commitment to implementing a wage award and granting autonomy to the university, addressing key demands of the union.
The ASUU KASU chapter expressed its appreciation to Governor Uba Sani for his swift intervention and leadership in resolving the dispute.
The union also extended gratitude to the university management, the Commissioners for Education and Sports, and other stakeholders for their roles in facilitating a quick resolution of the impasse.
Following the suspension of the strike, Adamu urged all academic staff to resume their duties and continue providing essential services to the university community.
