KNSG Moves To Revamp Vocational Training Schools

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reiterated the determination of his administration to resuscitate vocational training institutes to address the effects of unemployment in the state.

The governor made the disclosure when he received a report from a 10-man committee led by Prof. Aminu Sulaiman who thoroughly assessed the condition of the vocational training institutes and submitted the outcome to the governor in Government House, recently.

Represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, stressed the importance of training youths on various skills adding that the schools were built with good intentions to engage, train and graduate well-to-do and skilled youths in the state.

He said: “It’s very saddening that in the last four years that the schools were closed by the past administration for a reason best known to them.

“If the schools were functioning up to now, only God knows the number of the students that benefited from it,” he lamented.

Our correspondent quoted the deputy governor citing an example with Informatics School which they are only two in the country, including Informatics Kazaure.

According to him, the first batch of students who graduated from the school and deployed to Uganda to further their studies have performed wonderfully in various disciplines amongst their counterparts in the university.

Speaking on the Sports School, which both pioneered by the former governor of the state, Engr. Dr Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso said it developed many young footballers.

He, however, thanked the committee for executing the work and promised to implement their recommendations.

Earlier speaking, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, assured that the reopening of the schools will pave the way for creating jobs and reduce the devastating impact of poverty in the state.

Revealing over 16 schools among 24 have been shunned, he disclosed that the committee has developed a strategic plan for the effective take-off of the institutions.

He added that the schools would admit both those that have a school certificate and those who hadn’t been to class.

On his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Aminu Sulaiman, said the governor made a giant stride given his move to revive the schools.

“Unless you supervise the schools you would understand the rationale behind the governor stuck to insure that he restore them,” he noted

The Chairman further explained that schools have a significant impact on the cohort of young people, women and households.
