Labour unions relax strike action in Lagos airports

By Aremu Alikeja Lagos

Nigerian travellers are expected to experience ease as labour unions “relax” strike action in Lagos airports.

Aviation sector workers union issued a notice to that effect on Tuesday.

On May 31, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared an indefinite nationwide strike from June 3 over the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage from N60,000.

In solidarity, aviation unions on June 2, announced readiness to join the planned indefinite labour strike.

The strike action, which has been ongoing since Monday, has reportedly hampered airport operations evidenced by copious flight disruptions announced by local airlines.

However, in the notice, signed by Francis Akinjorin, deputy national secretary of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the workers said they are relaxing the strike action at the airports for one week.

“Union members say they are ‘relaxing’ the action for one week and not suspending the strike to give FG the one week grace and test their sincerity,” the notice reads.

This means that normalcy would return to airport operations which had hitherto been severely impacted.

Amid the pangs of the strike on Monday, the federal government invited leaders of the NLC and the TUC for an emergency meeting.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday (today) through the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission.
