By Usman Bello,  Damaturu.

The Federal Government has selected 20 states for the pilot phase of its Open Schooling Programme (OSP).

This was disclosed with a 2-day preparatory meeting of stakeholders comprising SUBEB Chairmen to acquaint them on their expected roles and responsibilities of the programme organized by UBEC in Abuja, attended by the acting Executive Chairman of Yobe State SUBEB, Alhaji Isa Shettima Buni.

The Open Schooling Programme is an initiative of the federal government which is instituted to promote enrolment, retto retention and completion of basic education in a flexible education system that allows learners learn in a conducive local learning environment at an agreed time with the community away from the conventional schooling system using Information and Communication Technology tools.

During the meeting, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi who spoke during an engagement with State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) Chairmen to strategize on the effective rollout of open schooling programme nationwide noted that it was capable of reaching a large number of learners while eliminating the barriers currently imposed by space and time.

Recall that UBEC introduced the Open Schooling system to improve enrolment, retention and completion of UBE programmes for Out-of-School Children in a flexible education system that allows participants to learn remotely in an informal manner.
