By Tom Garba, Yola
As the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today, December 3, 2024, a development expert, Dr. Maurice Vunobolki, has made a significant donation to support persons with disabilities in Adamawa State.
Maurice who is the State Project Coordinator of the Northeast Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) Adamawa State Project Coordination Unit joined global partners to observe the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
He keyed in to this year’s theme: “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future” and visited hundreds of disabled men and women in their Centre, in Yola North Local Government area.
On behalf of the Vunobolki Care initiative, the Adamawa State born recovery expert and financial scholar donated 30 tricycles and N2 million cash to the association, aiming to alleviate the challenges faced by its members.
While presenting the donation, Dr. Maurice emphasized the importance of a strong human mindset, stating that people with physical disabilities can still engage in productive activities and contribute to nation-building.
Dr. Maurice encouraged the association members to prepare their mindset, be determined, and strive to achieve their goals. He also appealed to other members of society to extend their generosity to the association, recognizing them as a vulnerable segment of society.
Her Excellency, Hajiya Lami Umaru Fintiri, wife of the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Neido Geoffrey Kofulto, also made a donation of food items and 210 slots of the Fintiri wallets to 10 members each of the association in the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, aiming to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
Adding his voice to the gesture done to the people with disabilities,
Comrade Abdullahi Toungo, Founder/Director of Vunobolki Care Initiative (VCI) and Chairman of the Adamawa State Physically Challenged, expressed gratitude to Dr. Maurice for his generous contribution. He assured that the items would be put to good use.
Comrade Toungo also highlighted that Vunobolki Care Initiative has been actively supporting the state through distributing instructional materials to schools, medical supplies, food and non food items, and other forms of assistance to beneficiaries across State.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Dr. Maurice Vunobolki by the National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities, in recognition of his extensive contributions to humanity.
