By Hussaini Ibrahim
A renowned Sunni Islamic cleric, Dr. Idris Abdulaziz, has passed away after battling an undisclosed illness. His death was confirmed by the official Facebook page of his mosque, Dutsen Tanshi Majlis Bauchi, which also announced that his funeral would take place at Games Village Eid Ground, Bauchi, at 10:00 am on Friday.
Dr. Abdulaziz, a respected Islamic scholar, left explicit instructions regarding his burial rites. In his will, he prohibited photography at his funeral, canceled memorial gatherings at his residence, and forbade attendees from jostling for his corpse or entering the cemetery with shoes.
Throughout his lifetime, the late scholar was known for his strong views and was often embroiled in controversies. His outspoken nature led to disagreements with successive Bauchi State administrations, traditional rulers, law enforcement agencies, as well as fellow clerics from the Izala and Tariqa sects.
Dr. Abdulaziz earned a degree in Islamic Law from the Islamic University of Madinah and later obtained a PhD in Islamic Jurisprudence from Sudan. His scholarly contributions and religious teachings garnered a significant following within and beyond Bauchi State.
Following the news of his passing, prominent figures and followers have expressed their condolences. A former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, prayed for the deceased’s soul to be granted Jannatul Fiddausi.
As the Muslim community in Bauchi and beyond mourns his loss, Dr. Abdulaziz’s legacy as a fearless preacher and Islamic scholar remains indelible.
