Reps Moved The Motion To Probe e-CMR Scheme Introduced By The Nigerian Police Force

Disturbed by the genuine concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association, Civil Society Organizations and car owners in general on the planned enforcement of the electronic Central Motor Registration (e-CMR) Scheme by the Nigerian Police Force in July, Barr. Kwamoti B. Laori calls for probe.

Rising on matter of urgent public importance, the member representing Demsa/Numan/Lamurde Federal Constituency, also moved for the suspension of the scheme to allow for public scrutiny.

The lawmaker who questioned the expediency of the scheme also termed it ill-timed and insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

Barr. Kwamoti observed that most Nigerians are frustrated by the current economic hardship they are exposed to and any further burden has the propensity to result in breakdown of peace, law and order.

The lawmaker called for a thorough investigation of the scheme, noting that it is not part of the duties of the Nigerian Police Force listed in its 2020 establishment Act.

He further highlighted that the Nigerian Police Force is not established to generate revenue for the government, therefore should remain within its constitutional roles of ensuring safety and security of lives and property.

Though the Lawmaker applauded the Nigerian Police Force for it’s initiatives towards crime prevention and investigation, he however cautioned that any innovations to curb vehicular crimes should be humane and sensitive to the pulse of Nigerians.

The law maker maintained that any scheme or initiative, however well-intentioned must also be backed by law, else it cannot stand.

He further stressed that as representatives of the Nigerian people, the Legislature is duty bound to make laws that ensure peace, order and good governance of Nigerians.

The House therefore resolved to suspend the scheme pending investigation.
