Members of the Gombe State House of Assembly committees on education, health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and other stakeholders attend a two-day workshop held on 13th and 14th, May, 2024, being organized by USAID Nigeria State Accountability, Transparency and Effectiveness (State 2State) at R&K hotel, Kano.
In her welcome address, The Chief of Party USAID State 2 State, Irene Karimi, stated that budget reviews are to make sure they are reflective of the wishes and aspirations of the people, adding that transparency in budget implementation would lead to investors confidence and the purpose of this intervention is “to strengthen the oversight function of the Gombe state house of assembly in budget process for improved performance”
The Speaker Gombe state house of assembly, Rt. Honourable Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo in his opening remarks commends State 2 State regular interventions in Gombe state to enhance good governance, he thanked Gombe state governor for his good vision for the state.
USAID State 2 State Gombe Team lead, Muhammad Abubakar presented an overview of USAID interventions in the state, reiterating the harmonious working relationship between the state government and the USAID, which leads to increased efficiency and performance of the subnational governments.
The Gombe state Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Salisu Baba Alkali, presented an overview of state budget process and the role of the state house of assembly in budget policy formulation, preparation, execution and control as well as budget accounting, monitoring and reporting.
The Commissioner revealed that the education sector has increased allocation of 31%, health sector has increased allocation of 5%, water, sanitation and hygiene WASH has an increased allocation of 64% in 2023.
The Commissioner of Education, Prof A’ishatu Umar Maigari, represented by Secretary/Ag Chairperson SBEB, Yawoji Ahmad Bala presented the Gombe State budget performance of SBEB from 2023 & 2024, adding on challenges and recommendation, where she disclosed that there are about 16,000 primary schools pupils and 1,7 teacher to serve, all depending on the Government budget, which needs intervention and support of the State Assembly.
