Why APC Still Needs Gov. Buni’s Magic Wand
By Yusuf Ali
Nobody I know among the leaders of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has contributed so much or understands the party’s internal dynamics like His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON. Having served as the party’s National Secretary twice, Acting National Publicity Secretary, Acting National Chairman, and currently, as the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Governor Buni’s profound influence on the APC is undeniable.
Throughout his tenure in these roles, Governor Buni has demonstrated an unparalleled ability to navigate the complex web of interests and power blocs that define the APC. His leadership as the Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee proved transformative, ushering in significant reforms, resolving factional disputes, and expanding the party’s membership base. Despite these achievements, the APC continues to grapple with a recurring challenge: instability in its National Chairmanship position.
The office of the APC National Chairman has become a revolving door, plagued by resignations, forced removals, and controversies. From Chief John Odigie-Oyegun’s contentious exit to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s court-induced downfall, the chairmanship has seen a series of unceremonious departures. Most recently, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje stepped down amidst mounting internal pressures, adding another chapter to the party’s legacy of leadership turmoil.
This persistent instability underscores the APC’s urgent need for structural reforms. The party’s constitution, in its current state, lacks the robustness required to manage its inherent complexities and diverse interests effectively. Recognizing this existential threat, the ongoing review of the APC constitution, led by Governor Buni, represents the most critical opportunity to address these flaws.
The revised constitution must be a game-changer. It should include clear and enforceable guidelines for leadership selection and succession, thereby eliminating the destructive power struggles that have repeatedly undermined the party. Strong safeguards must also be introduced to shield the National Chairman and other party structures from undue external interference, ensuring independence and fostering trust.
Governor Buni’s experience as Caretaker Chairman highlights the importance of institutionalizing accessible and binding mechanisms for conflict resolution. These mechanisms should proactively address grievances and ensure that factional disputes do not escalate into crises. Additionally, the constitution must mandate regular, structured dialogue across all levels of the party, fostering inclusivity and cohesion.
Buni’s track record speaks for itself. His ability to manage the APC’s internal dynamics and resolve seemingly intractable disputes is unmatched. His leadership of the constitution review process is not just timely but essential. By embedding these reforms, the APC can transform its leadership structure from a symbol of instability into one of resilience and unity.
The APC still needs Governor Buni’s magic wand. His deep understanding of the party, coupled with his reformist vision, offers the APC its best chance to secure lasting stability. It is only through his proposed constitutional reforms that the party can truly fulfill its promise as Nigeria’s governing political platform.
