Yobe Biomedical Research Centre A Great Asset To Nigeria- Prof. Jonathan

By Usman Bello, Damaturu.

Professor Jonathan Stoye, Principal Group Leader, lnternational Activities of the famous Francis Crick Institute, London, said the commitment of Yobe state government to its Biomedical Research and Training Center is a great investment to the state and country.

He stated this on Tuesday when the state Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, paid a working visit to the institute in London.

The Francis Crick Research Institute, is Europe’s largest research institute, and also notable in research and training.

Stoye described the readiness of Yobe government to collaborate with renowned Research institutions as a great treasure for the future of the state.

He noted that the wisdom in establishing the center at the state University and linking it with the Teaching Hospital would promote scientific research, training and improvement in medical service delivery.

“I have seen the passion in you, and the commitment to get it right through your search for collaboration with renowned Research institutions as the right step.

“I will like to congratulate you personally for what you have done for your state. I assure you of our willingness to partner you to do more” Prof. Stoye assured.

He said the centre would be used for research and training in diagnosis and drug discovery, vaccine development, the study of human biology, diseases and health care development.

Earlier, Gov. Buni expressed the readiness of the state to develop the Biomedical Research and Training Center into a World class centre.

“I and my team are here to establish more areas of collaboration that would fast track the development of the center.

“I want to assure you that we will work assiduously not just to maintain this collaboration but to strengthen it.

“I am glad to inform you that the Yobe State government has awarded a N160 Million contract for the construction of a dedicated site for the Biomedical Research and Training Center.

“In addition to provision of infrastructure and equipment, we are also committed to building human capital. Last year, we facilitated international training sessions bringing experts from across the globe to Yobe State.

“These sessions have provided training to over 140 scientists and doctors, bridging the gap in basic science and its practical, clinical applications. This synergy is crucial as it will directly translate to improve healthcare delivery to our people.

“One of our major challenge today, is Renal disease and Malaria. We will most sincerely appreciate your kind consideration for a strong partnership and collaboration to overcome this very unfortunate and huge challenge” Governor Buni appealed.
