By Madu Mohammed, Maiduguri

The Borno state Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum has vowed to close the 36 established Internally Displaced Person’s (IDPs), camps for the affected Maiduguri flood Victims in two weeks, , as unaffected people were trooping into the camps.

Governor Zulum who stated this yesterday when the Director General of the National Emergency management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar paid him a sympathy visit at the Government House, Maidugurii said in the next weeks he believe the water will recede and people are expected to start returning to their houses.

He lamented that people from nearby areas and that were not villages, affected by the flood, have been trooping to the camps to benefit from aid, diverting resources from those who genuinely need it.

“So far, we have established about 36 camps, but unfortunately, even those that were not affected are trooping into the camps to curb the influx of the people that are not affected we have decided to be given rations that take it for next week”, Zulum said.

He said ” it is our believe in the next two weeks the water will recede and we are expecting to start rehabitating the affected areas and returning them back. We can’t afford to allow people to stay in the camp for too long. We are going closely with the (NEMA) to generate data, provide medical assistance, shelter and relief materials ”

“Our main priority is keeping in the camp for the next two weeks and how to support them to go back to their houses”, he added.

Zulum while commending NEMA and the UAE for their support said , “We appreciate your efforts in supporting our people in this difficult time.”

Zulum urged NEMA to collaborate closely with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to address the humanitarian crisis exacerbatee by the collapse of the Alau Dam.

Earlier, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mrs Zubaida Umar said that the United Arab Emirates donated 50 tonnes of food items to the victims of Maiduguri flood.

Mrs Umar ”the UAE has donated 50 tonnes of relief materials, including food and non-food items, to support the flood victims in Borno State,”.

The DG assured that NEMA would continue to work with the state government to ensure the relief materials reach the affected persons.

Also, the Sumal Foods Company Limited, Ibadan has also donated 50,000 loafs of bread and 5,000 cartons of Biscuits to the victims of Maiduguri flood victims .

Speaking during a sympathy visit to Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House, Maiduguri, Mr Irish said ” we are here to commesurate with you and the people of Borno over the unfortunate flood disaster that killed many people while several houses, shops and public building destroyed.”

“What affects Borno affects us, because Borno is one of our biggest market. We want to also annouce our donation of 50, loafs of bread and 5,000 cartons of buscuits worth N50 million for onward distribution to the flood victims”, Mr Irish said to those who genuinely need it.
