Epileptic power supply, UNIMAID to get 12 megawatts solar power plant

To meet the energy needs of the University,, the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), has embarked on the construction of 12 megawatts Solar Power plant to electrify the university and its environs.

Addressing journalists at his velidatory press conference to mark the end of his tenure, at the Elkanemi Hall of the university,  the Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba said ” the power plant which part of the Federal Government ” Energizing Education power projects is undertaken by the government through Federal Rural Electrification Agency”.

The solar power plant which is 12 megawatts is expected to be completed in July, 2024 and when completed it will only meet the power need of the University of Maiduguri and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, (UMTH) which have 7 and 5 megawatts respectively and the excess power will be sold to host community or Borno state government “, the VC said.

He ssid money geenerated will add to the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), of the University and also fund other developmental projects of the university.

Prof Shugaba said ” despite the security challenges faced by the university during my tenure, we have not kept it open and even recorded numerous through modest achievements in different sectors, including security, administration, infrasturactural development, academic programmes and activities linkages and community relations among others”.

He said some of the achievements includes the construction of new Biochemistry complex, Abdussamad International centre for inovation and enterpreneurship development, donated by a busbusiness mogul, Dr Abdussamad Ishaka Rabiu and the new petroleum edifices Engineering complex, constructed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd,.

The Vice chancellor said the university also secured N750 million grant to fund the enterpreuurship centre, as well as the recognition of centre as centre for enterreneuship centre by the UNDP and research grant from Macauthur foundation to the centre for counter terrorism and extremism study.

He advised his successor to always open his doors widely for advise, critism and sugesstions to succeed.
