No Nation Can Confront Regional Security Challenges Alone — Matawalle

By Hussaini Ibrahim

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has emphasized that addressing security challenges in West Africa requires a collective approach from all affected countries.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Gala Night for the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, Matawalle underscored the importance of regional cooperation in tackling threats such as terrorism and insurgency.

“Over the years, our region has faced evolving security challenges, from terrorism and insurgency. Yet, through our collective resolve and cooperation, we have made significant strides in tackling those threats,” he said.

He commended the dedication of ECOWAS military chiefs to the shared vision of peace, unity, and regional development, highlighting the need for stronger military collaboration, intelligence sharing, and capacity building to ensure security and stability.

Matawalle reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ECOWAS and the operationalization of regional security efforts. He stressed that no single nation could effectively address these challenges alone, urging member states to strengthen their cooperation.

“Tonight’s gathering is a testament to the enduring spirit of partnership that binds us together. Let us renew our determination to uphold the values of professionalism, resilience, and unity in our collective defense efforts. Together, we shall continue to build a safer and more prosperous West Africa,” he added.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, described the meeting as a pivotal moment in the region’s efforts to enhance security and cooperation. He called on ECOWAS defence chiefs to reflect on their shared goals and reaffirm their commitment to peace, stability, and development.

“I am confident that the discussions and deliberations these few days have been fruitful and productive. And I am sure they will translate into concrete actions that will further strengthen our collective efforts towards achieving a more secure and prosperous West Africa,” Musa said.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of regional unity in confronting security threats and underscored the need for sustained military collaboration to ensure peace and stability in West Africa.
