Gov. Uzodimma unveils 33.1km Owerri–Onitsha road spanning five Imo LGAs
By Hussaini Ibrahim
OWERRI, NIGERIA — Governor Hope Uzodimma has unveiled the reconstructed 33.1-kilometre Owerri–Onitsha Road, describing it as a key infrastructure project aimed at improving mobility and boosting economic activities across Imo State.
Uzodimma said the project reflects his administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen road infrastructure across the state in order to ease transportation, support trade and enhance economic development.
“From zone to zone, we have continued to improve the road network across Imo State, making life easier for our people, promoting commerce, and strengthening economic activities throughout the State,” the governor said.
He noted that the Owerri–Onitsha Road serves as one of the major gateways into Imo State and has now been transformed into a durable and motorable corridor capable of handling heavy traffic.
“With a steady and strategic approach, we have transformed this vital corridor into a well-constructed, smooth and durable roadway designed to support heavy traffic and ensure safer, faster movement for commuters and businesses alike,” Uzodimma said.
According to him, the 33.1-kilometre stretch cuts across five local government areas — Owerri Municipal, Owerri West, Mbaitoli, Oru East and Oru West.
The reconstruction also addressed the previously failed section at the Mgbidi–Oguta intersection, which had long posed challenges for motorists and residents in the area.
Uzodimma described the project as more than a road reconstruction, noting that it represents a broader effort to reconnect communities and stimulate development across the state.
“This project represents more than just reconstruction; it is a reconnection of our dear State,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing other critical road projects across Imo State as part of efforts to sustain infrastructure development and improve the living conditions of residents.
