Adamawa Govt Ban Activities Of Scavengers as police declares immediate enforcement

The Adamawa state government has announced the barning of all activities of local scavengers in the state.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri stated the bar while signing an Executive Order prohibiting activities of Scavengers through out the twenty one (21) local government areas with effect from last week Wednesday, 14th August 2024.

According to the order the prohibition  shall remain in force across the state until further notice and that,any person who engages in scavenging commits a criminal offense and shall be liable to arrest and prosecution.

“Security agents operating in the State are empowered to search and arrest any person who violates this Order as any person found guilty shall attract a six (6) months imprisonment and a fine of N100,000.Both imprisonment and fine.

‘The Order adds that any person who circumvents or attempts to interfere with the free exercise of the office of the Governor, hides or offers cash or subverts the course of execution in any way shall be prosecuted in line with the provisions of Section 5(2) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, and the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018.

Therefore any person who violates this Order is guilty of an offense and shall be liable to:

“This Executive Order serves as a strong warning to all scavengers and those who engage in such activities.

“The Adamawa State Government will not tolerate any actions that compromise the health, safety, and well-being of its citizens; violators will be dealt with swiftly and decisively. We urge all citizens to cooperate with the government in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.” The Governor said.

Meanwhile, the Adamawa state police command has directed all its operational units to ensure strict enforcement of the executive order in the state.

Spokesman of the Command,SP Suleiman Nguroje disclosed the development in a press statement saying that the state commissioner of police, CP Morris Dankombo directs all Divisional police officers,Operational Commanders and Area Commanders to immediately enforce the executive order signed by the Governor prohibiting  Scavenging in the State.

“The directive are with immediate effect and shall remain forbidden in all the 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State until further directives.

“For the avoidance of doubt, ” *scavenging* means the act of rummaging through waste or engaging in any activity that constitutes a nuisance or health hazard.

“The CP warns that any person who engages in scavenging activities from 15/8/2024 commits a criminal offense and shall be liable to arrest and prosecution.

“The Command’s Operative deployed were directed to be professional when dealing with the violators. The Command will Check and arrest any person who violates this Order and will be prosecuted.

“This  Command warned  all scavengers and those who engage in such activities to desist henceforth and Cooperate with the security agents deployed for the enforcement as the Command will not tolerate any actions that compromise the executive order.”The statement declared.
