Concern citizens of kano south decry exclusion of zone from executive power

By Uzair Adam

A coalition of concern citizens and stakeholders from Kano South Senatorial zone has bring to the public domain the decade sidelining the exclusion of zone from executive arm of government and it described it as “27 years of consistent political marginalisation” in the state’s executive leadership structure since the return of democracy in 1999.

The open letter, signed by Alhaji Hamisu Yau Garba (Rtd. ACI), also known as Dan Madami, was addressed to the Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, and copied to relevant government authorities, members of the State Executive Council, the State House of Assembly, and political stakeholders.

In the letter, the group said Kano South—which comprises 16 local government areas, including Ajingi, Albasu, Bebeji, Bunkure, Doguwa, Garko, Gaya, Karaye, Kibiya, Kiru, Rano, Rogo, Sumaila, Takai, Tudun Wada and Wudil—has remained politically sidelined in key executive positions despite its population and structural significance.

It stated that since 1999, no indigenes of the zone have emerged as either governor or deputy governor of the state, unlike Kano Central and Kano North senatorial districts, which have both occupied the positions at different times.

The group noted that Kano South is not a minority bloc, pointing out that it hosts three emirates—Gaya, Rano, and Karaye—and represents a major agricultural and economic hub of the state.

Speaking through the letter, the signatories described the situation as a structural imbalance that has persisted for decades.

“Since the advent of the Fourth Republic, Kano South Senatorial District has experienced consistent and systemic political marginalisation in the distribution of key executive positions,” the letter stated.

It further argued that the exclusion contradicts the principles of fairness and inclusion, stressing that governance must reflect equity among all parts of the state.

Indirectly referencing constitutional provisions, the group cited the need for balanced representation in line with the federal character principle and democratic ideals of justice and inclusiveness.

The letter warned that continued exclusion could deepen political alienation, weaken public trust in government institutions, and reduce civic participation among residents of the zone.

However, it maintained that the message was not intended as a confrontation with the government, but rather a call for dialogue and corrective action.

“We respectfully but firmly call for deliberate efforts to ensure Kano South is fairly represented in key executive positions,” the group said, adding that future political arrangements should consider governorship prospects, inclusive appointments, and a structured power rotation system.

It also urged the state government to ensure balanced representation in the appointment of commissioners, special advisers, and heads of agencies, while calling for a formal stakeholder dialogue involving traditional rulers and political leaders across all senatorial districts.

The signatory, Alhaji Hamisu Yau Garba, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to peace and unity, stating that Kano South remained dedicated to the progress of the state despite long-standing grievances.

The letter concluded with a call for “justice, fairness, and inclusive governance,” expressing hope that the current administration would address the concerns in the interest of stability and development.
