Gov. Buni Commissions N800m Ultra-Modern Paediatric Complex in Damaturu
By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman
In a bold move to enhance child healthcare services, Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has commissioned an ultra-modern 80-bed Pediatric Complex at the Yobe State Specialist Hospital in Damaturu.
The facility, valued at N800 million, was unveiled on behalf of the governor by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, development partners, and members of the public.
Constructed in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the complex is envisioned as a Centre of Excellence for pediatric treatment and nutrition stabilization. It is equipped with advanced medical infrastructure, including a pediatric pharmacy, kitchen, laundry unit, and a child-friendly play area — all tailored to ensure holistic and specialized care for children.
Speaking at the commissioning, Dr. Gana delivered Governor Buni’s remarks, stating, “This facility is not just a structure; it is a statement of our collective resolve to give every child a fighting chance at life.”
He lauded the ICRC for their financial backing and technical partnership, noting that the organization has also committed to supporting the facility’s staffing needs for the next three years.
Dr. Usman Geidam, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, described the new complex as a game-changer in pediatric healthcare, highlighting its potential to significantly curb preventable child deaths and improve health outcomes for children across the region.
The project marks a significant milestone in Yobe State’s drive to strengthen maternal and child health systems, especially in post-insurgency communities striving to rebuild critical social infrastructure.
The event also served as a rallying point for renewed public-private partnerships aimed at scaling up healthcare delivery in underserved areas of the state.
