The problem with Atiku, and why Peter Obi has taken over

By George Onmonya Daniel

WHAT is Atiku selling to Nigerians? Pretty much nothing. He isn’t saying much either, not proffering to solve any problem or change anything. That is why Peter Obi has taken over that space of the one presidential candidate to be taken much more serious. Peter Obi has been talking about changing Nigeria, he appeals to young people and appears to talk to everyone at least, in an era when many want to hear from their leaders. Atiku isn’t doing that.

You think Peter Obi just became popular overnight? No. Peter Obi became popular when he appeared on the debate as Atiku’s Vice President. He was the only one who did some research and try to compare Nigeria to other countries and talk about the potentials of Nigeria if certain things are done differently. People saw a different type of politicians who sees the problems, or what they perceive as the problems. During the Coruna Virus lockdown, Peter Obi was on Arise TV severally, talking statistics, comparing Nigeria to other nations, talking about issues, what can be done and how to change other things. Where was Atiku then? He was too big to be on TV talking, or he in his second home in Dubai. When many Nigerians became Obidient, it was because they listened to Obi on television. They wanted a new guy, someone they saw as quite different from seasoned politician.

When Obi hit that 6 million votes in a fierce contest with Tinubu and Atiku, in an election marred with violence and rigging, winning Lagos and Abuja, he got the attention of everyone. Today he is the man most people are looking forward to become president, not Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku Abubakar is still not telling Nigerians anything, or selling anything new. That’s the problem with Atiku. Majority of Nigerians think he is a big part of the problem why Nigeria is what it is today. Obi has pushed Atiku out of space as far as presidential election contest is concerned this year and next. Even the presidency are aware that the biggest problem for them is Obi, not Atiku.
