Yobe Ranks Among Nigeria’s Top 25 States in Education Spending, Reaffirms Buni’s Commitment to Human Capital Development

Yobe State has been ranked among the leading states in Nigeria in education expenditure for the first quarter of 2026, further reflecting the sustained commitment of Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, to investing in education and human capital development.

Data released under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and TheCable Index showed that Yobe State spent N8.33 billion on education in the first quarter of 2026, placing the state 25th among the 34 states captured in the report.

While Kano State led the national ranking with N59.11 billion, followed by Lagos with N39.93 billion and Delta with N33.34 billion, Yobe’s N8.33 billion expenditure places it ahead of several states, including Edo, Kebbi, Taraba, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara, Anambra, Cross River and Imo.

The expenditure is particularly significant considering Yobe’s relatively smaller population and revenue base compared to many of the states ranked above it.

Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Buni has embarked on an ambitious education reform programme covering infrastructure development, recruitment of teachers, scholarship support, improvement of learning facilities and expansion of access to quality education across the state.

The administration has constructed and upgraded schools across Yobe, including the establishment of mega schools designed to provide modern learning environments for students.

In addition, the government has recruited thousands of teachers to address manpower gaps in public schools and improve the quality of teaching and learning.

Governor Buni’s administration has also sustained one of the country’s most extensive scholarship programmes, supporting thousands of Yobe students in tertiary institutions within and outside Nigeria.

The government has equally recorded remarkable interventions in professional education, including sponsorship of hundreds of Yobe indigenes to the Nigerian Law School.

Education remains a central component of Governor Buni’s Continuity and Consolidation Agenda, with the administration continuing to commit substantial resources towards ensuring that young people in the state have access to quality and affordable education.
