Diabetes, Hypertension Crisis: Imo State Trains Healthcare Workers to Fight Back

By Chioma Ajunwa

In a concerted effort to address the escalating burden of diabetes and hypertension in Nigeria, the Imo State Government has taken significant strides to improve public health outcomes.

The state’s commitment to this cause is evident in\ its partnership with the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF)-funded Diabetes Awareness and Care (DAC) Phase 2 Project.

In May 2024, the State Ministry of Health (SMOH) and the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHCDA) joined forces with the Health Systems Development Foundation (HSDF) to conduct a training program for 85 healthcare workers.

DAILY HINT learnt that, the participants were selected from 42 public and private health facilities spread across Imo State.

The training initiative aimed to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively diagnose, manage, and prevent diabetes and hypertension.

During the training session, the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Prosper Ohaghanya, praised Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation for outstanding efforts in Imo State.

He highlighted the importance of this training in building the capacity of healthcare workers to effectively combat diabetes and improve overall health outcomes in the state. Dr. Ohaghanya encouraged participants to leverage their new skills to create a healthier Imo State.

By enhancing the capacity of healthcare workers, the state aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce the overall impact of these chronic diseases.

The DAC Phase 2 Project aligns with the Imo State government’s broader vision of promoting public health and well-being.

Through this collaboration, the state is taking proactive steps to address the pressing health challenges faced by its citizens and create a healthier future for all.
