Hope Rises in Ngalda as Governor Buni Builds Ultra-Modern Market to Revive Local Economy

By Hussaini Ibrahim

For the people of Ngalda, a once-thriving commercial town in Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, the construction of a new ultra-modern market has sparked fresh optimism about economic recovery, job creation, and community revival.

The project, initiated by the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, is fast becoming one of the most talked-about infrastructural undertakings in the area. Designed to restore Ngalda’s status as a major trading centre in the Northeast, the market is expected to attract traders from across Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Bauchi, and beyond.

Community members say the construction has not only brought hope but has also reaffirmed their belief in the power of responsive governance.

“Governor Buni has given us more than a market,” said Malam Ibrahim Talle, a local trader in Ngalda. “He has restored confidence in the government’s ability to bring development directly to the people.”

The project, being handled by Damuli Nigeria Ltd, began a few months ago and has already reached an advanced stage. Residents and observers alike have expressed surprise at the speed and consistency of the work, which has continued day and night without interruption.

“This is the first time we are witnessing a government project that doesn’t stall after the groundbreaking,” said Fatima Garba, a local food vendor benefitting from the ongoing construction. “The work is serious, well-organised, and offers real opportunities for the youth.”

Ngalda’s historical reputation as a trading post goes back decades. Strategically located, the town once served as a bustling hub linking traders and farmers from across the Northeast. However, like many rural towns in Nigeria, it fell into years of neglect. Many believe this market could be the spark needed to reignite commercial activity and drive economic growth.

The new market is expected to host modern stalls, storage facilities, administrative offices, loading bays, and security outposts — all tailored to meet the needs of today’s traders. According to locals, it will not only generate revenue for the state but also help absorb thousands of unemployed youths into meaningful economic activity.

Analysts believe the Ngalda market project reflects a broader strategy under Governor Buni’s administration — one that prioritises infrastructure development as a means of sustainable growth.

“This is more than a political statement,” said Aminu Lawan, a political affairs commentator based in Damaturu. “It’s a smart economic decision. If well managed, it could change the outlook of Fika LGA and increase internally generated revenue for the state.”

Governor Buni, since assuming office, has made rural development a core component of his governance agenda. His administration has invested in roads, healthcare, education, and community-based infrastructure. But for many in Ngalda, the market stands out for its potential to directly impact daily lives.

“This market will improve our standard of living,” said Hauwa Abdullahi, a young entrepreneur who plans to open a shop in the new complex. “We will no longer need to travel far to trade or buy goods. It will boost our income and support our families.”

Although the state government has yet to announce an official commissioning date, sources close to the project say it may be completed in record time if the current pace of work is sustained.

Residents are hopeful. Traders are preparing. And the anticipation across Fika LGA is palpable.

For Ngalda, this market is not just a project — it is a promise fulfilled, and a future reborn under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
